Wonderful place. On the street where the cigar shop is located, you can truly feel the essence of Rio de Janeiro. The street and buildings are historic. The cigar shop has a good variety of cigars - including Habanos - very well stored. There is also a diverse selection of whiskeys. The owner is a very pleasant person, with whom I chatted for a long time. A must-stop for cigar aficionados. I will return and recommend it.

Tabacaria do Ouvidor is simply excellent! The atmosphere is welcoming and very well-maintained, perfect for relaxing and enjoying a good cigar in peace. In Rio, where the buildings rise white against the sky and palm trees cast long shadows on the street, there is a place where men come to smoke. It is a good place. The kind of place where the leather chairs have known many stories and the wooden humidors hold their cigars like soldiers in formation, waiting. The walls are red, not the red of blood but the red of life, and against them hang the old cigar labels that tell their own histories. The brick wall is honest and true, the way a wall should be. Outside, the tables wear blue and white checkered cloth and people sit close together, smoke rising lazy in the afternoon light. Inside, the man behind the counter know cigars the way old fishermen know the sea. They will show you Cubans that are strong and good, Nicaraguans that are true, and Dominican puros that burn clean and taste of the earth they came from. The shelves go up to the ceiling, all wood and glass and light, holding more cigars than a man could smoke in many lifetimes. They have whiskey too. Good whiskey. The kind that burns warm and makes the smoke taste better. You can sit in the leather chairs that embrace you like an old friend, or you can go outside where the air moves soft through the streets of Rio and the tables are close but not too close. The people who come here are real. Some wear suits and carry briefcases heavy with important papers. Others wear skimpy bikinis or t-shirts and carry the weight of their art in their eyes. They all smoke the same way, with respect for the leaf and the light and the time it takes to do a thing properly. It is not a place for tourists who want quick pictures and faster drinks. It is a place for those who know that some things cannot be rushed, the aging of tobacco, the pouring of whiskey, the telling of stories that matter. The shop closes at six, when the sun is still high and hot over Rio. But until then, it is there, solid and true, on Ouvidor Street where the old buildings watch and wait. It is a go

I’ve been looking for a place to buy good quality cigars and finally discovered it just steps from my office. I don’t speak more than a few words of Portuguese but the manager crafted his words carefully so that I could follow. He guided me on size and flavor. The shop was enticing and exciting with the selection and vibe. I will be back!
